Theremonster

Theremonster

The Looperstar Theremonster – a crazy noise making theremin designed for shoegaze, post-punk band 13-Monsters.

It started in April when Jamie from Chicago band 13-Monsters asked if I could build a theremin. Although I had not actually built a typical theremin instrument, I had spent quite a few months experimenting with theremin technology with the idea of designing a theremin controlled expression pedal for guitar effects. This is something I had shelved to be revisited at a later date but it seemed like a fun idea to use some of that research to create something different, a theremin that could compete with a rock band.

The basic criteria was to build something small and battery operated that could make loud crazy sounds using a few controls. The other main feature of the Theremonster was to make it compatible with effects pedals and also a guitar amp so Jamie could use it live with the band.

Very quickly it came to us that this theremin should have a metal plate instead of the usual antenna and that the 13-Monsters bloody hand logo should be printed on that plate. Jamie got to work printing the decals for the plate and I sourced the components and started prototyping.

Jamie first used the Theremonster in a track Northen Lights by Goalie his solo music project:
